Introducing Wendy Redden

Wendy is a member of our small Thread Sister group. She is interested in creating 3D textile vessels on a theme. Recently she has been working on a series of seed pods which she will be exhibiting at Pepper Street Arts Centre's "Wild and Wonderful" exhibition from 16 February to 21 March 2014. Here is one she shared via email due to the cancellation of out meeting due to extreme heat experienced here in Adelaide this summer.

 

Belonging to Motivational Groups

After studying textiles at Marden Senior College, I joined a number of groups to help me keep motivated and moving along in creating textile art. It is a great way to keep in touch with people, see ideas and find out what is going on in the world of textile art.

FAN is convened by the  Textile Art teacher at Marden, Suzanne Gummow. It aims to bring together any one interested in any aspect of textile art, four times a year. At  the meetings, notice is given about upcoming exhibitions and workshops, celebration of achievements and an opportunity to introduce yourself and share what you have been making. There are usually 30-40 people at the meetings.

The Textilers group is large and meets 3-4 times a year. It is a group of people who studied at Marden during 2012-13. They several times a year. sometimes to socialise and share textile information and achievements and sometimes to  plan exhibitions. At the moment the group is convened by Chris Linton who also produces a newsletter for the Textilers.

The Thread Sisters are a small group of ex Mardenites who meet monthly to share and critique work being developed by members. The members sometimes organise an activity which furthers our artistic skill base. Our aim is to support each other in whatever art each aspires.

Interest in Pinterest!

For a while now I have been collecting links - pins - on Pinterest just to get a visual representation of things I like in the world of art. After a while my single collection seemed to be quite eclectic and I set about trying to group my "pins" onto "boards"  of similar things or ideas.
I do not intend to keep these collections permanently and will delete pins and boards after I have used them for inspiration in an experiment or project.

I have collected mainly pins of textile

•  faces, figures, and groups of people 
•  circles
•  textures
•  stitch combinations 
•  examples of composition and technique

There are a number of things in common in most of the pins. There is a great deal of contrast in value, interesting use of space and incompletion in the appearance of the pin.

The question is, why do these things resonate with me (as opposed to landscapes for instance), and what do I do with these interests?

                                                        

Seasons Greetings

So I start a blog. I have wanted to do this for some time. Why I wonder? To share in this electronic age? So that the folk I bombard with emails can elect to see what I do rather than me send perhaps unwelcome email? I guess I am hoping that by blogging, people who are interested can view my ponderings and makings can view if and when they choose.

I will post my recent UFO completion. A small quilt started in early 2012 for the Glenelg Quilters challenge, before I got busy with Visual Art classes at Marden. It is crudely made on cotton painted with setta silk dye, then simply embroidered.
